George Wallace House Foundation Stabilization and Exterior Rehabilitation.

This project represents the foundation replacement and the interior and exterior rehabilitation of the historic George Wallace House. The house was constructed in 1916 and is located within the Harry S Truman National Historic Site. The house had several foundation, architectural, environmental and safety issues that were required before it could be used for long-term staff office use. In order to address the foundation issues, the entire house was shored up on beams, the old basement removed from below the house and the basement and foundation re-poured.

Overall Work included:

  • Foundation demolition and replacement, including new footings
  • Shoring
  • Concrete porch demolition and replacement
  • Exterior concrete stair and sidewalk demolition and replacement
  • Iron railing restoration
  • Site drainage improvements
  • First floor framing stabilization
  • Hazardous materials abatement
  • Wood shingle repair and/or replacement
  • Exterior woodwork repair and replacement
  • Removal and replacement of asphalt roofing and flashing
  • Removal and replacement of gutters and downspouts
  • Lawn restoration
  • Mechanical and electrical improvements
  • Wood window restoration and replacement
  • Storm window replacement
  • Brick masonry restoration and reconstruction
  • Historic fencing protection, temporary removal, and replacement

Challenges/Solutions – The project was halted for over two months because mold contamination was discovered. Working with hazardous materials professionals as well as the National Parks Service we were able to continue the project. In addition, the US government experienced a “shutdown” and most key Park staff were removed from the project. Through schedule acceleration and aggressive management RB kept the project on budget and schedule.
