Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Expansion & Renovation, Romulus, Michigan

RB Construction was a Joint Venture Partner for this Design Build project that involved an expansion and renovation of the WCAA Public Safety Building on the west side of Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The building expansion has a 2,430 square foot, single story addition composed of offices, classrooms, a firearm cleaning room and storage support areas. Interior renovations consisted of design upgrades to the building’s pistol range to meet Michigan Coalition of Law Enforcement certification standards. The new construction of the addition was composed of spread footings with double wythe, reinforced masonry bearing walls supporting steel joists and metal decking for the addition’s modified Bitumen built up roof. The pistol range modifications consisted of adding overhead steel joists to support the loads imposed by the new, ceiling hung, armored baffles. New acoustical panels were also hung from the overhead structure, and on walls parallel to the range’s firing lines to provide noise abatement and comfort to the users of the range.

Related improvements around the building included new AOA (Air Operations Area) security fencing, gates and pavement modifications. Also, additional paving and drainage was installed to accommodate a decommissioned DC-9 aircraft which will be used for mock rescue training.
